Chapter Six

Cassius

It was a good thing that Cassius was the one driving the motorcycle and Garth was in the back because he had not stopped smiling the entire time. After a lazy day spent catching up on sleep, making love, and ordering in, Cass and Garth hit the road back to Pineville. They were returning with, not a lot of information, but some. Enough to get started at least. And Sibelius had promised to send anything he learned, so there was the chance for more.

Cassius pulled up to a gas station in the middle of nowhere. It was likely the last time they would need to fuel up before arriving home.

"How much longer?" Garth asked quietly, sliding from the bike to stretch.

"A few hours at most, less if I push it. Why? Are you excited to sleep in your own bed tonight?" Cass joked as he fueled up.

Garth faced the street and mumbled something in response.

Something about the tone made Cass take notice. When they'd left New York, Garth had been all smiles like Cass. They'd driven down the road like two lovers cuddling, but now that Cass thought about it, only he'd stayed deliriously happy. Garth had gone quiet somewhere around the middle of America.

Garth turned, walking toward the station.

"Where are you going?"

"Bathroom," Garth replied without turning around.

Cass sighed, putting the gas nozzle back in its spot before rolling the bike to the side of the station where the bathroom doors were. When Garth came out a few minutes later, he'd put on a sweater. It wasn't that cold out, but when they were on the road, the wind could whip. Disappointed, Cass realized he should have thought of that and insisted Garth wear a sweater.

"You can wear my jacket as well, mate, I don't want you to get cold." Cass, who had been moving toward Garth to help smooth out the hood of his sweatshirt, froze. His hands were raised, nearly touching Garth when his eyes fell down to the base of his neck where Cass's collar had been nestled when they left. It had been there before Garth had gone into the bathroom as well. "Mate, I think you might have dropped-"

When Garth wouldn't look at him, Cass's heart clenched. "I didn't drop it, Cassius. I took it off."

So many emotions flared all at once. Anger, betrayal, hurt, self-doubt... had Garth decided Cass wasn't worth it? Obviously, he had.

"Don't look at me like that, Cassius. The promise was for the trip, for us to pretend like we were the only ones in the world during the trip, and I did."

"All while counting down the seconds until you got to stop?" Cass snapped.

"You know it isn't like that. I loved every second I spent with you. I... I will never forget-"

Cass turned away, not wanting to direct his anger toward Garth, but needing to channel it somewhere. "Don't fucking do that, Garth. Don't make me your dirty cherished memory that you pull out when you're old and gray and feeling really fucking sorry for yourself.
